meta-information, documentation, and rambling about our instance

Hello World

I read somewhere that every tech-adjacent site has to begin that way, so here we are.

This is destined to be the main information page for the firetribe.org instance of Firefish on the Fediverse.

What is Fire Tribe?

firetribe.org is an online social networking tool, somewhere in between Twitter and Facebook while not being either. It’s a privately hosted server that connects to other privately hosted servers throughout the world using a system called ActivityPub. Together these servers combine to create what has come to be known as the Fediverse.

Why is Fire Tribe?

This started as a pet project by a bored tech goblin who was sick of seeing Facebook posts 3-7 days after they had been posted by friends (while drowning in freshly promoted advertisements) and had just spent the weekend reminicing about the “good old days” on an old forum site that no longer exists. With the help of some open-source internet magic, a bunch of hasty installation, and spare computing resources a brand new adventure had begun.

Who is Fire Tribe?

Fire Tribe is made up of members of the fire-performance and flow-arts community and their friends. Primarily spread through word-of-mouth and invitation to help keep a sense of community. The server and services are owned and administrated by @dracoling.

Where is Fire Tribe?

Our server is located just outside Montreal, QC, Canada.

Our members are located all over.

How is Fire Tribe?

We’re doing pretty good, thanks for asking.
